Chalked – Luxury interior design firm in Singapore

Chalked was first founded by director Sandy Tan in 2017. Ten members strong, the team handles it all: developing new, innovative designs, supported by skilled draftsmen who prepare detailed construction drawings, as well as managing furniture, fixtures, and equipment, and ensuring cohesive and functional interior solutions. The firm’s design philosophy centres around prioritising collaboration and embracing diverse perspectives, recognising that creativity thrives through collective effort. “We find inspiration in unexpected places, fostering curiosity and drawing insights from a wide range of sources to fuel innovative solutions,” Tan shares.

She first knew she wanted to become a designer when she was exposed to the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of the interiors industry, which, she tells us, “keeps it constantly interesting and free from monotony”. Drawn to the challenge of continually learning and adapting, she also finds fulfilment in seeing a project come to life through the collaborative effort of a dedicated team, as well as the sense of achievement when a final design is completed successfully.

Her past work experience, including opportunities to travel to multiple countries, has also significantly enhanced her creativity and open-mindedness. “This global exposure has allowed me to draw inspiration from various cultures and perspectives, giving me a unique edge in the creative industry.”

Starting her own firm came naturally, driven by affirmations and encouragement from existing clients and vendors. “Many of them reached out to me during my contemplation of my future when I left my previous design house after almost nine years,” she remembers. “This support gave me the confidence and motivation to take the leap and pursue entrepreneurship in the design industry—I am eternally grateful.”

What sets Chalked apart is the team’s versatile approach to design. The designers don’t subscribe to a single, fixed style. Instead, they believe in exploring multiple facets of creativity and staying open to new ideas. This approach enables them to undertake multi-disciplinary projects, ranging from show suites and commercial spaces to private homes, demonstrating versatility and expertise across different typologies.

Among Tan’s proudest projects are numerous high-end penthouses in Singapore, including New Futura, Marina One Residences, and The Residences at W. These projects have allowed the team to work with exclusive, high-net-worth clientele, understanding and meeting their unique design requirements and preferences. “It’s been a rewarding experience that continually pushes our creative boundaries,” Tan says.
